Jesus turned and saw them following and said to them, “What are you seeking?”
— John 1:38a
Two disciples of John the Baptist have just been told, “There! Look! Right there is the Lamb of God!” (John 1:36). So, naturally, they turn to follow Jesus.
If you’re reading this, you’ve probably been following Jesus for some length of time now. His question is a fair one for us too. You’re following Him… but for what? What are you seeking?
Better circumstances? Social status? Well-behaved children? Safety? Comfort? Answers? (Confession: some of those are
sometimes often my answers.) I like the disciples’ response better:
“Teacher, where are You staying?” (John 1:38b)
It’s simple, but I hope my response, I hope your response, is something similar. More of You Jesus, we are seeking more of You.
At this point in the disciples’ journey their “seeking” is likely out of piqued curiosity after John’s bold statement about Him being, you know, “the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world” (John 1:29). But, as we see in the stories of these and other disciples, and as we’ve probably experienced in our own walks with the Lord: the more we seek Him, the more we find Him, the more we want more of Him. It’s a promise (Jeremiah 29:13-14).
Jesus’ response makes it all even sweeter, “come and you will see” (John 1:39). Let’s recap the conversation again (paraphrased):
Jesus: What are you seeking?
Disciples: I think just… You?
Jesus: Come on…
Isn’t that always the way with the Way? We are invited along! To be with Him, to get to know Him more, to ultimately find eternal life in eternal union with Jesus.
In 2019 we asked you to consider with us, all that God has done, is doing, and will do. We ended last year (we ended the last decade!) in celebration, inviting you to “come and see” the amazing things we’ve seen Him accomplish in our midst and Who we have discovered Him to be (Healer of the broken comes first to mind!). Now we invite you to jump in to 2020 with us as we seek more of Jesus.
To “seek” comes from a root meaning, “to perceive by scent.” You might imagine a hound on the hunt, nose to the ground, diligently searching out its object. All over God’s Word we are told what we ought to “seek” with this level of intensity (spoiler: it’s mainly Him and His Kingdom!). And all year long we will be confronting those things that we are actually seeking, and realigning them with this pursuit of Jesus!
We hope you are as excited and expectant as we are, as we gear up to equip men and women all over the world to share God’s story of sex with confidence and to navigate a sexualized, digital age with hope—seeking the LORD above all else! We are also preparing for the second season of A World Free: The pureHOPE Podcast (catch up here if you missed season one) where we will explore this theme in depth! Until then, “seek the LORD while He may be found; call upon Him while He is near” (Isaiah 55:6), and check out some of these awesome resources to help you on your hunt…
