“Sex is not just at one of these levels [Maslow’s hierarchy of needs]. It actually streams through all of these levels if you’re paying attention.” —Dr. William Struthers

What is actually happening in our brains when we seek? Is sex a physiological need? Can our minds be renewed? Dr. William Struthers, a behavioral neuroscientist, aka our friend Bill, joins us to discuss.

A LITTLE BIT ABOUT OUR GUEST…

Dr. William Struthers is a behavioral neuroscientist and Professor of Psychology out of Wheaton College in Chicago, Illinois. His lab research interests are in the neural mechanisms that underlie behavioral arousal and the processing of novel environments. That’s fancy for, he knows a lot about what is actually going on in the mind when men and women use pornography. Dr. Struthers is masterful at weaving together faith and neuroscience, and he has spoken internationally about the impact of online sexual content and the impact of sexual exploitation on spirituality. His book, Wired for Intimacy: How Pornography Hijacks the Male Brain helps us better understand the biological realities of our sexual development, so that we can cultivate healthier sexual perspectives and interpersonal relationships. Bill has been a great friend of our ministry over the years and a professor of many emerging leaders in our network. You’ll love hearing his perspective.

LIVING IN THE LOOP

Purity is not a state of being, but a state of becoming P-U-R-E. Coming out of this episode here are ways you can…

PRAY | Pray for your mind to be renewed by a more compelling vision of sex. Ask God to reveal this to you.

UNDERSTAND | We are in fact embodied creatures. We’re created for connection, full, all-five-senses-involved type connection! How can you cultivate that in your own life today? (We recognize we are in a unique moment in time right now, how can you cultivate a longing for this type of true intimacy?)

RESOLVE | Resolve to take care of your mind. Remember our brains are neuroplastic (able to change), and sanctification is a process. Commit to that process today!

ENGAGE | Have those conversations and ask those questions that help both you and your loved ones think critically. Like a child, ask why?

Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.” —Romans 12:2
