And Mary said, “Behold, the bondslave of the Lord; may it be done to me according to your word.”
— Luke 1:38a
A bondslave is one who devotes himself entirely to the will of another.
Why would we choose to give Him our will? That sounds more like resignation or defeat… and maybe, it kind of is.
But, when we resolve to identify ourselves as His “bondslaves” what we are really doing is wrapping ourselves up in His mercy. We are bound to the God of abounding love. His yoke is easy, His burden is light.
C.S. Lewis said it like this:
“The hardness of God is kinder than the softness of men, and His compulsion is our liberation.”
One of our readers said it like this:
“You take hard topics and give them a soft landing.”
She was referencing our magazine, but seeing as how we are striving to be imitators of Christ, these “hard topics” only find a soft place to land because that’s how the Way, the Truth, and the Life is! Complex and uncompromising, but ultimately compassionate.
